How To Get Rid Of House Flies

How To Get Rid Of Houseflies

So how do you get rid of houseflies? Everyone has a fly in their house every now and then, but this year seems to be especially bad. I have lots of flies in my house that I want to get rid of.

Having those nasty flying bugs buzzing around my head drives me absolutely crazy. Not only are they annoying they carry many germs and diseases.

I have no idea where they are coming from but I’m learning rather quickly how to get rid of houseflies naturally!

House flies

House flies are not only one of the most annoying insects as they buzz around your head while you are trying to sleep or any other time, but they are also extremely unsanitary. These annoying insects will search out any tiny scrap of food they can find. They also leave behind something for you or your children, bacteria that causes diarrhea, cholera and food poisoning to name a few.

House flies lives for approximately 2-3 weeks and breed on garbage and feces. A female house fly can lay up to 500 eggs. Wow that’s a lot of flies!

A Clean House

Believe me, I am no Clorox Queen. I like to think that my home is clean and tidy. The flies on the other hand have found “something” they like because they don’t want to leave.

The first thing to do in getting rid of house flies is keep your house clean. It has been shown that certain oils such as orange, lemon and cloves repel flies. Surfaces such as your counters and table should be wiped down. Cover your compost, garbage, bread and fruits.

If house flies do not have access to your food scraps there will be no temptation for them.

House Flies Do Not LIke The Cold!

It’s a beautiful day outside and you just can’t wait to open those windows and get some fresh air, getting rid of that houseatosis.

Make sure that all your windows and doors have screens to keep those nasty house flies outside and not in your home.

Fly Repellents From The Kitchen

There are some simple and inexpensive ways that you use from your kitchen to repel house flies.

It has been shown that house flies do not like the smell of cloves, neither do some of us humans. They also don’t like basil, planting basil can repel flies so they will not be attracted enough to go in your home every time you open the door. You could even plant some basil outside by your doors and in a window box outside your windows to keep the flies away.

The Water Bag

An Old Wives Tale? Some say yes, some say no. When we moved to North Carolina one of my husband’s co-workers told us to hang bags of water to keep the flies away.

The premise behind this is light refraction and the many lens in the flies eyes. Simple explanation. We tried it and honestly don’t know if it worked or not. I think it may have been that we just could not get the bags to hang and they were leaking all over!!! I think we need a heavier plastic bag.

This picture of hanging water bags was taken by John Woods in Mexico at a restaurant so someone else seems to think it works.

Fly Traps

Fly Traps are easy to use. They come with bait which is put in the trap. The bait attracts the flies and and traps them in the container or bag to their demise. Once the trap is filled, you can just throw the bag away. Fly Traps are made for indoor and outdoor use.

Be sure to keep them at least 30 feet or so from your house so that the flies stay away from your house. The traps have a unpleasant odor for people but the flies love them.

There is also a huge array of non toxic sprays that will keep your back yard, camp ground or beach blanket free of any insects.

How To Get Rid Of Ants

How To Get Rid Of Ants In The house

Ants in the house, I think we’ve all had them every now and then and want to get rid of them as naturally as possible.

One here and there but then again there are the persistent crawlers that seem to like your home and have invited all their friends to come along to the party and now they don’t want to leave.

Getting rid of ants in the house can really be an easy and quick task. Some of the best ways to get rid of ants are natural home remedies that are safe for your children and pets. Some can easily be found in your kitchen cabinet.

Where are those ants coming from?

Ants are really amazing, if you think about it. I get a little creepy looking at them crawling around. They have a committed commune mentality. Are abnormally strong for their size and they can lift many times their body weight. Ants are so small they can crawl through the smallest crack or crevice in your home.

Did you know that ants follow a line? For instance the breaks in the sidewalk cement, the foundation of your home, etc. This can help you in eliminating them, you can follow them back to where they come from and eliminate their ant hill. You can also see where they are entering your home and caulk any cracks or holes.

What Attract Ants

Knowing what attracts ants can help you get rid of them by eliminating their food source.

Plain and simple – food, sweet or greasy food or any type of food!.

Ants have a great sense of smell and can find the smallest crumb on your kitchen floor.

How To Prevent Ants – From Getting Into Your Home

Keep all attracting substances, such as sugar and sweets or grease, covered tightly. Even the smallest of crumbs can attract our crawling friends.

Now I am no Clorox Queen by any means but keeping your home free from crumbs, spills and sticky messes will prevent ants from wanting to come and hang out in your home.

Keep your kitchen clean, bleach or citrus works well.
Don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink, wash all dishes.
Make sure that you wipe all surfaces and sweep all crumbs to prevent ants.
Keep floor clean and mop often..
Clean up the little one’s messes.
Keep pet food covered.
Take the trash out promptly and as often as possible.
Try to place your trash cans and recycling bins as far away from the house as possible.
Make sure that your window and door stripping is in good working order.

Ants don’t like lemons, yes there are things that ants do NOT like. Pepper, Cinnamon and Cayenne Pepper.

It’s an easy mix to make, just mix lemon and water, half lemon and half water. You can mix this right in a spray bottle. Spray where you see ants and at entrance way or where they are entering your home. Safe to use indoors and outdoors and safe for pets and children.

What’s In Your Cabinet?

There are some great home remedies to get rid of ants right in your kitchen cabinets. I used these ingredients when my neighbors cat used my vegetable garden as a litter box. So it is safe for pets.

Ants don’t like the scent of Cayenne pepper, black pepper, and cinnamon. and you can easily use these to get rid of ants in your home. Just spread some on the ants and you will see them scurrying away. Spread some on your pantry shelves to keep ants away.

Another no no for our friendly ants is vinegar. I use vinegar to clean my hardwood floors, maybe that’s why I hardly ever get ants. A dual purpose.

Bay Leaves are another deterrent for ants, just leave some on your kitchen counter.

There are a couple of ways you can use these ingredients.

Mix with water and spray the outside of your home along the perimeter and where you see ants entering.

Simply create a line with the spice, remember ants like to travel in lines, make the line long enough so the ants can’t go around it.

Foods That Eliminate Your Ants

You would think that you shouldn’t be feeding your crawling friends. But there are some foods that are lethal to ants.

Cornmeal and Grits are one of those foods. Spread a little dry Cornmeal or Grits where you see ants. Once the ants feast on it, it will expand inside their mighty bodies and eliminate them. This method is effective inside or outside. Outside you spread the Cornmeal or Grits around the anthill.

Don’t You Just Love The Smell Of Baby Powder

Another thing that ants don’t like is the smell of baby, although I love it. To each his own. So for this use we’ll go with the ants opinion. Just sprinkle baby powder on the ants and the area that they are entering your home.

You can also use the baby powder in your pantry and around sticky jars such as honey and syrup.

Boric Acid

Many people use Boric Acid mixed with anything sweet to get rid of ants. Just mix 2 parts sweets to 1 part boric acid. The ants are attracted to the sweet and Boric Acid eliminates them. Boric Acid has a very low toxicity rate.

Boric Acid is also effective on a wide range of insects.

How To Get Rid Of Silverfish

Silverfish or fishmoth, I know you have seen them. Silverfish are a wingless insect about 1/2 inch to an inch and are silvery blue in color and have a fish-like appearance with it ‘s movements. Are they in your home? There are chemical free, safe for children and pets, easy and effective ways to get rid of Silverfish in your home. Silverfish can do more damage than you think to your home!

Where Silverfish Live

Silverfish prefer dark areas such as kitchen cabinets. Silverfish also like papery areas such as old books and newspaper stacks, areas with high humidity. Get rid of those old newspapers to help you get rid of those Silverfish!!!

Silverfish can be found anywhere in your home including garages, closets, underneath beds, couches, electrical appliances such as keyboards, yes anywhere.

What Silverfish Eat

Silverfish like to feed on the glue behind your wallpaper. If you let it go on for too long they can cause costly damage that will significantly lower the value of your home or cost you hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars in repairs.

Silverfish like paper and this includes your precious photos.

Silverfish also like to munch on sugar and can easily get into your cereal boxes. That’s enough to gross anyone out!!!

Silverfish are also attracted to eating silk, synthetic fabrics and cotton clothing, so they may be crawling around in your clothes when you hang them in the closet. You won’t be too happy when you put on shirt that has silverfish in it or in your curtains.

You might find Silverfish in your shower or bath munching on your shampoo or shaving cream, they like the cellulose ingredients.

Did you know that Silverfish, in extreme cases, can live up to a year with no food!!!

Where Are The Silverfish Coming From

It is easy to tell where silverfish are, because they are always near some food. You can catch them in starches, sugars and protein. Starch is a silverfish favorite, so watch your food carefully. I keep my sugars and cereals in air tight containers, keep them fresh also. You can also find silverfish in synthetic fibers, cereals, silk, starched fabrics, wallpaper pastes and glues. If you think a specific part of the house is infested, then clean that part thoroughly before silverfish can damage your stuff.

Signs that silverfish had fed on something include notches, holes and scrapings with irregular shapes. Usually, you will see these marks on wallpaper because silverfish try to get the paste. You will also notice yellow stains on your shirts, pants and any type of fabric.

One way to find out if you have Silver is to mix water and flour together in order to prepare a thin paste, and then with the help of this paste paint both the sides of few index cards. When the index cards get dry, locate them in the area where you think you have silverfish. If there are few irregular notched edges and scrapping on the index cards, then you have Silverfish.

How To Get Rid Of Silverfish

Get Rid Of The Moisture

To get rid of Silverfish, you have to go to the source. Silverfish live in moist areas. In your house, moisture is high in places where water is present, like in piles of mulch, piles of leaves, attics, kitchens, bathrooms, leaks and sinks. Silverfish also thrive in books, bookshelves, water heaters, stoves and laundry rooms, because they like it in places where the humidity level is high.

Silverfish can be controlled through moisture reduction, you can reduce moisture at home. Fix everything that leaks. It’s best to use silicone caulk in infested areas to cover cracks. You can also use humidifiers inside the house. Silverfish don’t survive in dry environments.
